I got everquest 2 yesterday, lovin it so far. Best MMORPG Ive played since getting bored of WoW and quitting. The problem is I have to run the graphics on "balanced" or below to have a smooth frame rate, which I thought was strange considering I have a brand new PC. Is this normal? Does Everquest 2 just require an extreme PC to handle high graphics settings?

I have no problems with other games like BF2 and F.E.A.R, I can run them on max settings

It's not your machine..

I bought EQII around the same time I bought Doom3, HL2 etc.

Essentially I built a new machine for this era in pc gaming. Ok, the 6800 ultra might be looking a bit old now but the rest still seems fairly ok (3800+, gig of corsair, 250gb hd).

Games I get now (after 2 years) still run smooth.

EQII runs like a dog. Always did, always will. They can't fix it.

Great gameplay completely ruined by an appalling engine. Don't expect it to get any better, it's screwed.

Ok thanks, are there any PCs that can run it at a playable framerate on extreme settings?

EQ2 is notorious for being extremely demanding:

If you read that (one of the most respected review sites), they got 9-12fps on x850xt crossfire with an FX55. OK so modern systems are faster but it gives you some kind of idea what you are up against.

Looking at the benchmark it also seems fairly cpu limited, with 7800GTX SLI only being around 17% faster than a single 6800u.

I'd guess for good smooth performance in extreme with everything cranked up you'd probably need a Conroe at 5ghz, but I'm not sure at what point gpu limitations would come into play.

Tell me about it, the engine sucks  I gave EQ2 up because of pefromance issues nice game though

Yeah, but even with garbage code if you throw enough power at it eventually you should get something playable :)

Just knock the detail down abit and play in a letterbox (i put all my toolbars and stuff in top and bottom black bars anyway so you aint lossing anything. Abit of time tweaking and it looks great and play well.

Lets be honest you'd have to knock the graphics pretty dam low to make it look worse than WOW.

As I understood it the engine was future proofed so that detail settings could be ramped up as graphics cards improved.

There used to be a message pop up if you went for very high graphics saying something like "no machine exists capable of running these settings. Please be sensible."

Great graphics doesn't change the fact the game's a bit of a grind though. My subscription got cancelled when I realised Guild Wars was more fun and £14 a month cheaper.

£14 a month? Are you just exagerating because when I signed up Im sure it said $15+VAT, which I worked out to be around £9.50, I havent checked my bank statement yet to see how much has been taken so Im not really sure

I think I had some kind of pointless extra that was a couple of extra dollars and then the bank charges you for a foreign transaction - It was around that value.
They may have lowered their subs though. I signed up at launch and by the time I quit about a year later the servers were pretty empty.

You may have signed up for all the eqplayers stuff? I think that was an extra 2.99 per month.
