Everquest 2 now F2P on steam :)

It was when it first came out and the were load of people playng in the starter areas. It still is a decent game but with a lack of players it will probably be dull. Plenty of content and takes months to explore.

Getting absolutely terrible performance here - an i5 2500k, gtx 560 ti, and 4gb of memory, and it's barely playable.

On what settings exactly?

As for the game, yes it is great. I'd argue the last true PVE MMO to be released, bucketloads of content in a rich fantasy world, with races and classes by the plenty, as much character customization as you could want and oodles of endgame content.

I would play it avidly, but it's let down badly by the engine, which is simply not fit for purpose, and the fact SOE "run" it. I've not seen them do much good for years with EQ2, the last couple of expansions have just been copying content off of WoW.

Messed around with a lot of the settings, couldn't get it to run smoothly, even selecting 'balanced' from the presets, which looked really rough.

I'd swear it ran better on my old 4870.

Must be an issue it has with your setup then, the game's always run like a dog on higher settings, I can max crysis 2, witcher, skyrim e.t.c. comfortably, but try to turn the graphics up in EQ2 and things generally grind to a halt in the ultra region, normally runs ok and if you have a decent fiddle, you can get something that looks fairly decent with good performance.

Make sure you're using GPU shadows and Shadow 3.0 in particular, turn down the dynamic lighting radius or whatever it's called, that mullers performance.

Played eq2 for a long time and the game will never run nice its almost all CPU. THey moved some stuff to GPU but not enough to worry about.

Ive never been able to run it on Top settings even with 4.4ghz and 2gb of Vram.

Its hilarious the work they put into raids, then i had to turn it down to basic settings to be able to do decent dps and stay alive.

Ah, I'd been missing the tiny 'advanced' button on top of the options box.

/wanders off to tweak

As I stay start by using Shader 3.0, then switch to GPU shadows, then start fiddling with all the sliders.

I havn't played for a few months, got a little bit of nostalgia so reinstalled the streaming client, only to find that my main character is "locked" because I don't have the correct "class pack". And there goes my interest in returning.

Remember Skyrim and Crysis 2 are ports from the more popular gaming machines. They run well on anything. EQ2 was made for PC, like the Witcher 2.

They were just examples of much better looking games, that run much better. Besides, I don't know if you've played EQ2 recently, but that engine was most certainly not 'made for PC' sticking it in any kind of category next to Witcher 2, is frankly insulting.

Do they still hamstring your skills? I seem to remember playing when it first went free to play and couldn't upgrade my characters skills/spells fully.

EQ2 was designed for fast single core CPUs when released, back before any dual-core system. They've tweaked a few bits here and there over the years but it's still terribly optimized.

EQ2 has been around for over 7 years. It went free2play a year or so ago. If you pay up, you can play the same as the subscribers do on the regular servers.

Its CPU intensive but can look pretty when you're not mid-raid. It was designed in the days of Pentium 4s and 1024x768 monitors.

The engine has been licenced for the new SW:TOR. I hope it scales better with larger resolutions and new gfx cards.

I wasted 5 years of my life in that game.

Hmm, quite clever how they limit you. I rarely got above expert level in any of my skills, so no biggie there. Not being able to equip legendary items is a killer though, since you pick up quite a few and they sit there in your inventory, taunting you :)

Class packs are a bit pricey too. Everything is in fact. At least I've gotten it running smoothly now. SM3 is pretty nice looking!

No it hasn't? Dunno where you got that idea.

Also, since I guess you're not keeping up with news, the game's just changed to a fully F2P model, no more seperated servers, F2Pers on in with subscribers now.

OK, I could've been wrong about that. Ze Internetz say its the Hero engine in SWTOR.

When I beta'd SWTOR, the similarities between EQ2 and SWTOR were uncanny. From character creation screens thru to the combat model and the sound of your toon running. Theres even the odd model lifted from SWG in there. If you load up a fresh install of EQ2 without any UI mods its remarkably similar.

as for EQ2, I knew the normal servers were going F2P as well, the existing subscriber base did their usual 'woe is us' thing on splitpaw/runnyeye. I think the F2P model might actually breathe some life into those servers.

What character class is best for newcomers?

I'm usually melee dps, wouldn't mind trying something different...I think wizards are a bit namby pamby though.

Don't want pointy ears thanks.
