Laptop running XP was incredibly slow, and a bit of messing about i found out it was the "hardware interrupts" causing it, and this was due to IDE controller drivers. so a uninstall and a reboot and the PC perked up a lot.

But its still slow, and I'm running some virus and spyware scans but they all cause cpu usage to be100% and obviously then take much longer than normal

It's a Pentium M 1.8GHz with 1gb of ram so it shouldn't be this slow or take up that much resources.

Only thing I've managed to complete was ccleaner. any ideas on root causes and solutions?

And trying it in safe mode now, it's ridiculously slow.

Make sure that the IDE drivers are now installed correctly and that the hard drive is set to DMA mode and not PIO.

It'll be that damn System Idle Process, that things *always* chewing up all my cpu!

:p

Its powered off suddenly twice now.
Its beginning to look like a hardware problem

And I've checked that its set to DMA, and a format is not an option at the moment.

Hard drive just passed the Fujitsu diagnostics test in DOS. then as i was exiting it powered off again.
