Every single router is slower?

Greetings All,

I have a network comprosing a 16port managed switch, an 8 port POE switch for cameras connected to the 16port. All used to fed by a Draytek 2820n on ADSL. Worked perfectly. No however I have FTTC and using the supplied Hub 6 am sync'd at 54 down and 9 Up. Issues with the closed nature of the Hub 6 meant I started down a path of upgrade testing. I told BT I was testing and asked my line not be throttled (error checking from constant disconnects) So assuming this went to plan can anyone shed any light on the following results please.

Hub 6 54/9
Hub 5 52/8
Echolife 612 43/6
Echolife 512 43/6
ECI CPE Type 1B 44/6
Billion 8800NL R2 45/6
Asus RT-AC88U 47/7
Draytek 2860n 44/6

Crap results compared to the Hub 6. I would rather not use the Hub 6 as it is a "barn door" when it comes to RFi and needs to go. Anyone got any thoughts.

Cheers

Constant disconnects on your line as you've been changing modems have triggered DLM into slowing down the line as it is perceiving it as being unstable. BT simply don't have the power "not to throttle" a line for this behaviour, they can only reset it once it has been and even then you can only reset once every 10 working days.

The 2820 isn't a great router either, try putting PPPoE directly onto a PC and testing.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention these tests took over two months to complete as I was borrowing routers etc. I dont know what you mean with your suggestion. Thanks

BT didn’t do anything to prevent DLM, so you were DLM’d and yes the HH6 is frustratingly restrictive, but it does tend to get decent sync’s.

Personally I went the other route, separate modem such as the HG612 (ex BT OR modem) flashed with generic firmware and then I can change routers/setup without a restart angering the DLM gods. Yes, it uses a slightly older chipset and the sync tends to start out a little lower, but in my case it improved over time and I see near max sync speed anyway. If you’re on the ECI based cabinets then an ECI modem is usually cheaper and may make more sense. Oh and yes, a short, high quality cable may make a small difference, at that sort of price it may be worth a shot if you can’t crimp one yourself.

HG612 is a good option and can pick them up for about £10/15 on Ebay. i wouldn't pay the extra to have the custom firmware install as its easy to do it yourself. I use an Zen supplied Zyxel VMG1312-B10D in bridge mode as it performs marginally better than the HG612. Have tried both connected to my RT88U router.

I've got a Draytek vigor 130 with the cable bleed recommends and a Netgear R7800 on Plusnet and get maximum sync 76Mbps down 20Mbps up and importantly no issues. Can definitely recommend running a separate modem and router with the high speed cable.
