ok i have a 350D, with the 18-55mm kit lense a 28-90mm lense (cheap) a 70-300, a 50mm and a 10-20mm. for everyday shooting i use the 18-55 or 28-90 so im looking to replace these with a better quility lense for everyday something to incorporate the both i have done some research and found a canon 17-85mm USM with IS, is this a good lense? or is there a better one? have about £450-500 to spend

Having used the EF17-85IS I can safely say its a very nice lens, but it locks you into the EFS system, id consider the EF24-70f2.8 or EF24-105f4IS.. both are imo better than the EFS17-85 and EF fit so if you ever upgrade bodies your sure the lens will not hold you back. They are both about £550-650 new, but im sure you could pick one up 2nd hand in your price range.

IMO, Both the 24-70, and the 24-105 are too big to be an everyday lens on a 350D. The 17-85 is very nice, and versatile, but I normally carry the Sigma 30 F1.4 on my camera. I am probably going to switch to a 17-40 + 135 F2 setup when I change my 17-85IS for the 17-40.

I reckon the 24-70 is def to big for an everyday lens but the 24-105 is a good size.

Only problem is on a crop camera (like yours) 24mm is not very wide, so i think you should consider the 17-40mm f4 L. It's the 10-22mm which lives on my 350d however.

Consider the Tamron 17-50 or 28-75. Both are rated as being able to compete with the equivalent L series for image quality, if not for build quality.

i like the look of the 17-40 L lense but it just doeant have the same scope distance as the 17-85 :P so im gonna go have a look at both tomoz in me local cam shops

I have the 28-135 IS which is excellent for the walkabout. I would have chosen the 17-85mm but as like you I have a 10-20mm for the wide angles, it gives you a little more range at the cost of having to swap round when you need a wide angle.

The 17-40 is a good lense but a bit short so i would have a look at either the Canon 24-70 L or 24-105L but both are over your budget. Otherwise the Tamron 24-70 mentioned by Mr_Sukebe is well worth considering. I keep hearing mixed things about the 17-85 IS lense.

Have you looked at the Tamron 17-50mm? Heard many good things about it - image quality is close to the Canon 17-40mm L but it is probably lighter, build quality will obviously not be as good.

It wasn't really spamming, it was making a valid and constructive point. I believe the smileys also indicated that it was supposed to be taken in jest.
