Hey peoples

Yesterday I just finished building my first comp... essentially. Moved stuff over to a new mobo and installed new gfx card and psu etc.

Since its been back up and running I can't help but notice everything looks a little softer on my screen. I have the XFX 7870 2gb.

I'm not sure if its some card setting or the monitor, or if I'm being paranoid, but I'm pretty sure stuff looks a little more washed out.

I'm only using an Acer AL1916W, but just ordered a Samsung S23B300H 23 inch Widescreen LED (1920x1080), do you think it'll make a difference? Its just I'm sure even on this monitor with my old 4850 it didn't look like this :/

Also it seems on chrome now with some videos full screen in 1080p I get a lot of slowdown/stutter, but it only seems to be chrome.

Just wondering if you guys know if its just a card setting or if the new monitor will look make it better :)

Sounds like a combination of not having the drivers installed and the wrong screen resolution set. I've seen what you describe as the screen looking softer, when the screen resolution is set less than what the monitor supports. The monitor therefore stretches the smaller resolution outputted from the graphic card, giving it that softer/blurred look.

Hmm, yeah I've updated the drivers though.

It's really annoying my OCD >.< also paranoid my card is broken cause of the stuttering lol. Frame rate really drops and then speeds up, but at the moment it seems to only be chrome. Safari and Firefox were ok when playing back.

Ugh! I should have just bought a OCUK premade build, Atleast then I wouldn't think I've broken everything lol

Your CPU is going to be bottlenecking your graphics card anyway. (Assuming you are using what's in your sig)

Run some sort of benchmark (Heaven 4.0 is a good option) and see how it runs. If it runs like crap then remove your drivers and install them fresh - try again.

Ok mate, ill give that a go tonight :)

Yeah using the CPU in my sig ATM, gonna order my i5 and new mobo/ram when I get paid at the end of the month.

I'm not sure if that's bad or good? Bearing in mind my CPU. But the thing is whenever I full screen applications like that, or games sometimes (Happened with BF3 yesterday) the clock & phase go's really weird, so what was a fine setting for my monitor a few minutes ago is now completely blurry. Actually after just correcting it, as I'm typing this it's gone again and now everything is blurry.

I go to this link to set it correctly: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/clock_phase.php

Minutes later it all over the place again :/ What would be resetting it?

Sounds like you might be having an issue with your monitor. Sometimes setting the refresh rate of the monitor higher can help.

Those benchmark results look fine and about what I'd expect given your CPU.

I guess we'll see tomorrow when my new monitor turns up. Hope it's my monitor rather than my 7870.

The acer AL1916W I'm using right now is very old, maybe got it in 2006. Ill be back tomorrow if its still weird lol, thanks guys :)

i should just wait till your new monitor arrives, get an hdmi lead plug it in and things will work just fine, also your cpu will be ok for now

Right click on desktop

click screen resolution

Click the small blue text advanced settings

Click the monitor tab

Screen refresh should be 60Hz (sometimes 59Hz) if it has defaulted too high or too low the image can look poor

A dual core with a radeon 7870? CPU is definitely a bottleneck..

No way man, it's the best setup in the world EVER. You guys are missing out!

Buying my i5 3750k, mobo and ram when I get paid at the end of the month, so not too worried about the bottleneck cause it will be gone soon :D
