Heya, I'm looking to upgrade my memory. I have the EVGA 680i board and I'm after a little advice. I'm looking for 4gb as I'm using 64bit vista. Budget is £200~ish. I've been poking around the site And I've considered the 2x2gb OCZ Reapers or going down the 4x1gb route and getting the Dominator 8500. I dont intend to overclock right away but it's certainly something I'm interested in doing eventually(I'm a novice o/cer). System is used all day between lite work and surfing but it is mainly a gaming rig so eeking out all the performance I can get would be fantastic. I don't get any change from the £200 either so I may aswell try and use it all(I can stretch to £250)

cpu is the q6600GO(pumping this upto 3ghz when new hsf arrives), GPU is 8800GTX.

Just get 2 of these:

No need to go 8500 IMO unless you plan to OC over 4.7ghz or something silly.

I have that memory now and I've had nothing but trouble with it unfortunatley. Can you advise on any other options? Looking for as fast as I can get for the £250 without worrying about the cash.

I've got 4x1 gig of the 6400 reapers in a 680i and it's fine, i didn't go for the 2x2 gig kit purely because it had worse timings and was about £40 more expensive.

Alright guys, thanks for the replies. I had heard some bad things about running 4x1gb but it seemed to vary from person to person. THIS review speaks very highly of them when used in conjunction with the 680i.. hovering over the buy now button!

Nobody reccomends the Dominators? :o

The Dominators are grand, but are expensive for what they are (the PC8500 Crucial Ballistix are the same thing with a different heat-spreader).

ocz platinum are able to produce 950-1000mhz. Combined with a q6600 a 3.6-3.8 overclock is achievable.

840mhz 4-4-4-12 at 1000mhz 5-5-5-15

Life time guarantee

Highly recommended

Solid performers

2 gigs £44-00
4 gigs £96-00 including delivery

Have 4 gigs of these modules in my second rig partnered with another BFG 680i no complaints best bang for buck in my opinion.

Thanks, I'll definitely be buying 2 kits for 4GB if I decide to go ahead with it. How are they stability wise? I'm not that bothered about OC'ing potential.

stability wise they are solid, no problems at all. To be honest i like my OCZ 8500 modules on my master rig but i am seriously considering purchasing another 4 gigs of the OCZ platinum and replacing my 8500 for these.

At the moment the pound is so strong against the dollar that is the reason these OCZ platinums are available at such a good price from OCUK. Before the price drop i think they were near £100.

They are also EVP protected (Exceeded voltage protected) Although it is recommended you do not exceed the recommended voltage.

Overall OCZ produce high quality modules, and these platinum modules are excellent solid performers.

Hi Cob, I'm considering 2 kits of this memory for an upgrade to 4GB, any ideas what they are like? are OCZ in general a good brand? support, etc. Anyones opinion is welcome of course :).

Thanks.

I liked my OCZ XTC Platinum. They even did 920mhz 4-4-4-12 @2.1v. I wish I'd never swapped them for Ballistix.

Cob did you have a moment when your clarity ran away from you?

Must have been a good knees up at the bar? :D

what on earth possessed you to swap your XTC Platinum modules for the Ballistix?

Heya, thanks for the help guys.

Fiddling with the reapers now came stock at 6-6-6-18 changed them to 5-5-5-15 tho I'm sure I can do better but I don't want to push it without some advice. voltage is 1.8 at the moment.

id keep them at the 5-5-5-15 you could try 4-4-4-12 or 4-4-4-18 might require a slight bump in voltage without exceeding recommended voltage
