Just wondering if this is really as straight forward as it sounds? So when the next generation of gfx cards come out presumably within the next three months then it is litterally just a case of paying the difference between this card and the new one out, no questions asked.

I only as because I know companies often make things sound more promising than they actually are.

Thanks.

Uncle, it is true, that is the case with the EVGA Step Up program.

Things to note are :

You have to clarify with them for your particular GPU; a supporting example is that people think the 8800 GT is a step up from a 8800 GTS, in EVGA's eyes it's not. They set the order as GT>GTS>GTX>ULTRA. (This is the same with the motherboards as well).

Also, there is a time window for both eligibility and close-out. Once you register your product, the timer starts. I would say ninety days is the max you can go before taking any action, but again, may vary by model.

A word of warning: If attempting to 'step up' in Europe, you may have a bit of a rough time as opposed to Stateside. There is an EVGA office in Germany, and supposedly a UK branch as well, but their level of community involvement is considerably less, which makes things more painful. You also have to 'cross-ship,' when you are in the midst of the program. They will not send you the new GPU until they receive yours.

I'd also like to know this. Has anyone tried it? As far as I can tell you send it back to EVGA directly. Hopefully they have a UK warehouse.

If you have a gts you cannot upgrade to a gt if you mean the new cards next year then yes you will only be able to upgrade if say an ultra to the 9800.Buy an evga gt then when the new gts 128 sp arrives upgrade to that?

I have a question regarding the step up program; Can you do this?

1. Buy a 8800 GT (from EVGA)
2. Don't register.
3. When the new 8800 GTS comes out, register.
4. Use the step-up program instantly and get a 8800 GTS?

Regards

Vir,

yes, but if I remember rightly, you would have to pay the difference. So, if you expect something to happen within 90 days and are in no rush, it's not worth your while doing it on purpose.

It's more for peace of mind that IF something unexpectedly comes out within 3 months that is mindblowingly better, you could trade in your old card and get an upgrade for cheap.

Thanks for your reply! I know I have to pay the difference but I'm not to bothered about that. You can register whenever you want and then the 90 day period starts?

Not true. EVGA do allow you to "step up" from an old GTS to a GT. No price difference just pay the shipping.

Maybe because the GT is new revision etc. Who knows.

It certainly was true you couldn't go from a GTX to a GTS but then again who would have wanted too?

Nope. They aren't that stupid. You have to fax them your original invoice when doing the the step up and you need to have applied for the step up within 90 days of the date of purchase irrelevant of when you registered the card.

Secondly, just for us Europeans, if you don't register your card within 30 days of purchase you only get two years warranty and not the 10 years. A bit of a scam there really if you didn't realise you needed to do that.

Wow, ok. Thanks for telling me

Well I'd say I would be pretty save if I bought a 8800 GT now, got 90 days for the 8800 GTS? It's due december..

Nope. See my other post but what would be the point of the above anyway.

New GTS cards out mid December so well within the step up program anyway.

If a new GTX happens to come out then chances are that will be within the 90 days as well.

I want to upgrade to the new GTS but it's not out yet that's why I was looking to get a 8800 GT and then use step up later :)

And finally you have to ship your card to Germany with the step up (or you did unless it's changed).

And price difference is EVGA price of new card vs price you actually paid for yours so pretty good since every retailer seems to be selling the EVGA 8800GT cards for more than list price.

I was planning on buying a EVGA GT now and stepping up to a GTS later but got fed up waiting for an EVGA to be in stock.

Another thing is the EVGA Crysis special edition, the full purchase price is used for the step up and you are allowed to keep the game when you step up. So anybody who is interested in buying an EVGA card and wants CRysis and may well use the step up should buy the special edition even if they could have bought the card and game seperately cheaper elsewhere.

You end up getting the game for free if you do use the step up.

Or the free game covers your shipping costs, whichever way you want to look at it.

Hahah ok looks good then, I live in The Netherlands so shipping costs shouldn't be a big problem as they are our neighbours...unfortunatly:D

Thanks for your input Greebo. Helped me out!
