Evga 9800GTX+

The GTX260 is the faster of the card you mention. What resolution do,you game at?

Have you conmsidered a 5770 which is comparable to a GTX260?

Yeah I would scrap the 9800GTX+ idea all together because like Marine said it is the same as a GTS250 but I think uses slightly less power

I don't mind second hand but I'm looking to spend £70-£120 I also have a coolermaster realpower 550w psu also I have never owned an ati card before and am not quite sure about how they compare with nvidia. Any pointers would be appreciated. I also game at 1600 by 1200.

1600x1200 is close to the same overall resolution as 1920x1080. I would personally say that a GTS250 or 5770 are not the best buy for future proofing. I know the 5850 is almost £100 out of your budget but i would strongly suggest saving up and getting one of those if you can, or just hold off upgrading for a few months and see what the prices looks like then.

To be honest it's not a good time to buy a graphics card imo, prices are just not good for the consumer at the moment. Unless there are any games you desperately want to play in the next few months i would just wait it out and see what the market looks like when the Nvidia midrange cards arrive and also a possible ATI refresh.
