Has anyone bought one of these? ive got a couple of the Skulltrail machines and didnt know if it was worth upgrading yet but ive been wanting to ever since xeon 5600s came out.

Well a normal quad core i7 (930) at 4GHz is quicker than a 771 Skulltrail clock for clock, so just imagine what one of these babies with two 6 core chips at 4.2GHz each!

OK, time for me to score some n00b points...
From what i gather these only support Xeon chips right?
Why can't you put i7s on/in this board?
Why make them Socket 1366 if they're separate? Why not 1365 or 1367?
Can you put 1366 Xeons in a 'normal' 1366 board?

Are EVGA motherboard any good these days?
The last one I had was sh... was shocking.

i7 CPUs have a single QPI link which is the link between the CPU and memory. It requires another QPI link (for a total of 2) so it can link to the memory and another CPU.

Xeon CPUs have dual QPI links so they can link to the memory and another CPU.

So using an i7 950 or similar would not work at all, it simply does not have the required hardware for it to operate.

However you can put a Dual QPI Xeon in a standard X58 motherboard, the 2nd QPI link simply disables itself as their is nothing else to link to.
