EVGA Pascal cards hotspot problem

What I'm trying to determine is how safe it is POST fix. Not relatively to others, but just for the card. I guess I will just wait for the objective testers to provide feedback.

Thats impossible to determine for me, which I find the bigest issue here. I have the classified so its had no testing posted either pre or post fix.

I can't even perform the repair at the moment as the instructions do not cover the very different layout the board has, I would have to guess where to place the bottom pad on the baseplate.

Also have to take a significant leap of faith to reach the conclusion the fix will work in the same way as the design has significant diffrences in areas where one of the pads is placed.

I know the card is effected but other than that I am utterly in the dark.

(edit) p.s I am taking it on trust that evega will resolve these issues's given time and I can understand why at the start things may be a bumpy ride. Time is ticking though and they are no longer at the start of this issue.

In terms of safety, they would have to pull the cards if they were unsafe. its a non-issue.

Utter lack of specific information a major issue and headache here for me at the moment.

Issues here will be different for everyone. If I had a 1070 or 1080 ftw, I would find things acceptable, unfortunatly I don't.

Seems like support are partially brain dead:

Your Question:

Please can you also tell me if my GTX 1080 FTW is one of the faulty vrm batches given it is an earlier card. I understand 3-4% are.
Your Answer:

Hi There Chris

We advising ALL 1080 FTW owners to update the BIOS

http://forums.evga.com/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-10801070-PWM-Operating-Temperature-Update-m2573491.aspx

You can download it from the above link....

This will resolve any concerns about cooling , however if you did want the extra thermal pads adding to the card, then we can send some out with a guide or we could it for you here at the UK service centre.

Just let us know

kind regards

EVGA

Any chance of a proper response Ben? The bios and pads are a separate issue.

:)Looks like a re-test by the original site that highlighted this problem now gives these cards the green light. Though you may need to brush up on your German:

http://www.tomshardware.de/evga-gef...s-infrarot-messung,testberichte-242265-2.html

The conclusion seems to be that the thermal pad mod alone brings the VRM temps down to an acceptable level. Good news for those with 1080's who have found the more aggressive fan curve to be too noisy. Not an issue for us 1070 owners, as the amended fan curve is no where near as aggressive as the one for the 1080's. Think I shall just fit the pads (when they finally turn up) and continue to use my own custom fan curve. Let's hope we can all soon put this behind us and move on:)

So I'm still waiting for thermal pads for 1080 FTW EVGA? where are they?

Yes...

Good to see that with the pad mod and higher fan speed, the temps are good. But also I would just like to get them installed and forget about it.

On that tomshardware it does not say anything about the thermal pads for the memory?

EVGA have said that they are having the thermal pads made and when they are ready they will ship them.
I'm at the point that I may do it myself.

Mike,

thanks for the link - thats pretty encouraging to see. Like you, I'll most likely do the pad mods and then leave the BIOS mod alone as I run a custom curve. I wonder if the delay is to do with the VRAM pads, as they did turn up after the initial set of instructions etc.

Maybe the original sets were ready to go but now they have to produce sets with the extra pads now too. Either way, I'm definitely encouraged. Just back from a LAN party weekend, and nothing blew up in a small, hot room so that's good. If we can get them all installed before Christmas that would be good :)

It doesn't get much better from evga. I've just today had it confirmed by support that they can't identify what batch of cards have the faulty vrms from initial shipments. The only way of telling is if it doesn't go wrong after a few weeks worth of use, you're supposedly safe. This is something on top of the thermal issue fixed with pads and bios update. Only 3-4% chance but still poor.

I'm assuming this is the original black screen issue with the 1080's? I thought that they had sorted this issue with their component supplier? So surely any new cards after this, should be ok? Or is it just that they can't identify which of the batches of early cards are effected? Not good news really:mad:

This issue has slowed down evga support massively. Been waiting 8 days for an RMA to be approved, whilst €700 out of pocket.

It's sorted past cards of a certain date, start of September from memory. It's bad enough having the issue, but to not even be able to tell what batches/serials are at risk is really poor.

Well it seems to me that thermal pads are still yet to be shipped.

Evga should be getting those out of the door asap.

Could not agree more.

Sounds from over at the official EVGA forums, that some folks in america are starting to get theirs. Though even when they are marked as "shipped" they are taking anything up to two weeks to arrive.

While I appreciate that there are obviously a large number of cards effected world wide... They need to get this ramped up now and the pads out to people. These are expensive bits of kit that we bought and a lot of people are anxious to just get this sorted now.

Even though my thermal pads are still showing "Awaiting Shipment", they just turned up in the post. So at least I'll be able to get this put to bed now. Thanks EVGA.

Though think I'll order up some TIM. I'm Sure the supplied stuff is OK. But can't do any harm to fit a known brand.

Thanks EVGA.

This whole charade can't be doing evga much good.

I lost confidence in my sc completely. For all i knew damage to vrms could already have been done and i wasn't happy applying a band aid fix. Replaced mine with a zotac amp which I'm very pleased with.

Fingers crossed this all gets cleared up soon.
