What do I need to do to make EVGA Precision X on-screen display work?

Do I need Rivatuner statistics server?

I've only ever had the OSD working when I had MSI Afterburner which needed RTSS too.
 
click on monitoring tab, in the active hardware monitoring section, click on the graph you would like to display, and near the bottom of the window is a tick box saying show in on screen display, tick that, do this for each graph you want displaying, then when you launch a game it should show you those stats.
