EVGA Superclocked 780 running 4x

Hey y'all

For some reason, one of my new EVGA SC 780s is running 4x whether in the top slot or not. Given SLI, this board should run 8x8x. But it runs 8x4x with one card in the bottom slot.

I have tested in the top slot alone and it also only hits 4x.

I ordered from the tree people so have asked for a return. My last ditch effort is to post here and see if someone knows anything?

Cheers

When you do the render test are you making sure to do it in full screen?

Edit:never mind you said it does it on its own.

Stupid question time, if you stress the GPU does it still stay at 4x? It's not an idle/power saving thing is it?

I also remember a website doing a GPU test where they limited the lanes from 16x to 8x to 4x to 1x but covering differing amounts of pins in the connector (which makes sense when you consider the size and position of PCI-E 1x and 4x slots). Is there any visible damage/contamination/dirt on any of the pins on the GPUs PCI-E connector that could be confusing the slot into thinking it's only a 4x connector rather than a full 16x?

Was going to suggest that the card may not be seated correctly, but since you say it has been removed and checked etc this is unlikely to be the case.

I assume the other card runs at full speed in the same slot?

Yep. Other card runs at 16x when in the top slot alone or 8x in the first or second slot with the other one also in the rig

Definitely the card

Have you tried putting the 2nd card (the 4x one) in PCIe1 and then the other GPU in another slot? Just making sure its not a motherboard setup issue.

This would be my first though as ive seen this behavior on my own card in some motherboards

Yes. I have tried and I get 4x8x

Do you have any other of your PCI-E lanes occupied with any other devices?

No, nothing. Inside the BIOS under the mobo checker - a handy visual checker for areas of the motherboard - it says 4x too pcie gen3

I know. I thought that but alas

flash that bios! Or simply use the old fix file that forces pcie3.0 and see if it refreshes it. You'll never know without a fresh windows install tho it might be borked registry or drivers.
