EX58 ram upgrade question

I'm going to upgrade the ram on my machine but need to ask what to do here.

I have the following mobo and ram.

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

Corsair Dominator GT 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C8 2000MHz Triple Channel Kit D
(CMG6GX3M3A2000C8)

I'd like to at least double the amount of ram (to 12gig). This mobo apparently can support up to 24gb. I would go for more than 12 gb but I don't think I can due to the cpu fan blocking one of the slots (see picture).

Can anybody advise if I can get more than 12gb of ram into this thing with that blocked slot or not. I don't want to change the cpu cooler by the way.

And, what is compatible with it. I've searched overclockers but not finding a lot to choose from. There are a couple of sets on this page http://www.overclockers.co.uk/produ...&catid=8&sortby=manual_sort&subid=1389&mfrid= but they are listed as 1600mhz. I currently have 2000mhz ram and don't know if 1600 is slower or quicker??

You can get 3*8GB in there - which is what I've got in mine at the moment :)

You can by a 2 stick kit and a single or by a four stick kit and sell the fourth stick (which is what I'm doing).

Someone else on here has 48GB in theirs!

Thanks for your reply. I hope you'll forgive me stupidity here as I've never understood RAM and never made the effort to. I've built three systems and they all worked great, but overclocking and ram timings and such always gave me a sore head :-)

I like the sound of 3 x 8gb a lot, but I thought I needed ram that is designed for a triple channel system and a 2 stick kit doesn't sound like it's intended for this - but as previously stated I know nothing.

How about you tell me what you've got and I'll buy it :D

Ok, thanks. I hope you don't mind some more daft questions. I appreciate your help so far!!

Does it matter that it's 1600mhz and my current ram is 2000? Going by some quick googling I've done I think the answer is no??

What slots would I put these into? The same as I'm currently using?

I think my bios is up to date - probably. I think I flashed it within the last year and I'm guessing they aren't updating this mobo now?

Would I need to do bios tweaking with those sticks to get everything working right, or just slap them in and chill out :D

No worries, here you go:

Does it matter that it's 1600mhz and my current ram is 2000? Going by some quick googling I've done I think the answer is no?? Yep, that's right the RAM speed shouldn't matter (it can be changed in the BIOS anyway).

What slots would I put these into? The same as I'm currently using? Yep, you just pop them into the same slot.

I think my bios is up to date - probably. I think I flashed it within the last year and I'm guessing they aren't updating this mobo now? If you flashed your BIOS in the past year then yep, you'll be up to date.

Many thanks. I'm going to buy them. Really appreciate your help.

That's okay, if you have any bother setting them up just post in here and I'm sure either myself or someone else will lend a hand :)

Thank god I don't have to flash the bios. I'm on 13 too :D

Putty,

No problems installing. Straight into the same slots the old ram was in and the system booted up fine and recognized all the sticks.

I opened up 100 images in photoshop, which used to cause my system to slow down a lot, and this time it had zero effect on anything, so this has been a success. Thanks for your help ;)

One thing I would like to ask. I always thought there was a difference between ram labelled triple channel and ram meant to be installed in twos or fours. I gather there isn't - they just supply you with the right number of sticks in the pack?? Am I right?

That's good news!

With regards to triple channel etc. yep that's pretty much how I understand it. It's the actual motherboard that runs in triple channel (dual also possible I think) and the RAM sold in triple channel kits is just the same as you would find in the single, dual and even quad kits.
