I've been offered a 1.5 core solo mini for £300.

I'm more after the superdrive, but the comparative core duo is £340 and a superdrive'd core duo is £419 (on the apple refurb site)

Its not going to be a powerhouse, more a server and media player box.

Or is it possible to upgrade to the superdrive?

It can be upgraded, but a aftermarket superdrive can be a bit pricy

The Core Solo is Core Duo with one core disabled, I haven't used one personally but i'd imagine it would run OK, compared to similiar speed PowerPC chips like in my iBook

As long as you gave it 1GB of RAM i'm sure it would be good enough for what you want to do

I just bought the £420 refurb'd duo :)

Its basically going to be 75% a hole for my external hard drive to plug into as a NAS drive and 25% general useage (I use my laptop 90% of the time)

So 512MB should do me fine :)

it should be a great purchase for what you want to do and easily upgradeable if you have a putty knife lying around :D

Cool, I actually have a 1.66Ghz Core Duo mini with 2 gig for my main machine these days.. plenty fast enough for anything apart from gaming :)

gaming for me

= red alert 2
= silly flash games
= WoW.

all which run nicely on my windows celeron laptop :p
