hi i was wanting to upgrade from 3gb ram to 6 or 8gb, when i hit a snag.

i found that this motherboard i have; 4core1600-GLAN has a ram limit of 4gb and 1gb limit per slot. i asked a techy friend and he said that it might be possible for me to exceed the proposed ram limit of 4gb because in one of the slots i have a 2gb module.

can anyone tell me for certain if i can exceed the limit or if not, is there any way at all to get around it.

thanks in advance.

Do you have any budget at all? Perhaps change your board to a different chipset if you don't want to spend a lot and desperately need the extra ram?

If you have more of a budget then seriously look at upgrading if you use your pc for demanding stuff?

its ok, i have a quad core intel Q8800 2.5ghz and also a gts250 512mb gcard. i guess i was only going to upgrade the ram because i can, and its the easiest part to change.

though i dont feel i NEED more than 4gb right now anyway. but thanks for the insight i now know the next major upgrade will be a new mobo :)

Hey, many motherboards say support up to x GB of ram but they often run more without any problems, but you can't be 100% sure it'll work till you try.
You might find some 2gb ram slots work and some don't.
If you can get 4gb through some combination you should be fine for normal usage.
