This is on a cleanly built machine, XP professional sp3.

I can't open a spreadsheet on a particular computer, even though I could before rebuilding the machine.

Now - I know that XLSM is a spreadsheet containing macros based on MS's new Open xml format, for 2007, but this was working before hand, so am I missing some converter program?

Ahhah thats the ticket, mucho gracias.

I got around it by saving on a 2007 machine as a 97-2003 workbook, but that will do the trick for future :).

It's worth installing the compatability pack if you have a bunch of 2003 machines, I've noticed more and more incoming emails from companies with .docx attachments and it's a real timewaster.

Hmm just to throw a spanner in the works, I installed that pack and it still doesn't work (can use the workaround but it's not a great solution!).

Tried opening excel first and then opening the document from within there? I found that can do it. Either that or associate the file extension with the relevant application from within fodler options
