Hi,

A rather old computer at work appears to be playing up. The saveas button has disappeared and certain options are greyed out. In addtion the "help" box can't be closed by left clicking on the cross.

Opening a new excel worksheet from the start menu appears to restore all the options but once the file is saved and you open said file it reverts to the broken state.

Any ideas what's going on. I know i've been a bit vague and i'm happy to clarify but i'm completely non nonplussed as to what is going on (more used to windows 7 and office 2007).

I'm used to win 7 and office 07 too now, but lets have a think about some things.

Is anything else on the computer playing up, do you have spyware / a virus, have you checked?

Is the file you are trying to open a read only file? You should still be able to "save as", but read only will prevent you from using the normal save button i'm sure.

Are there any kind of networks involved in this, is the excel document used by any other people at the same time?

The "help" box not being closed, just tells me that the system is struggling to actually run and that it may be something else, if there are other problems like extremely slow startup and reactions, maybe it's a bigger problem. Have you tried diagnostic tools like memtest?

I would try a repair of the Office installation through Add/Remove programs. Also check to see if any add-ins have been installed in Excel and disable if they have.
