Excel Pivot Table Question

I have data in the format off the table at the top. I want to convert it to a Pivot table in the format at the bottom, where there could be a potentially unlimited number of Parents and Childs. I want to be able to get a count of the number of times that Parent/Child combo appears.

This is obviously a simplified example but how would I do this with a Pivot table?

make a 3rd column as Value

put formula in as A2&B2

then pivot table the whole 3 columns, child = row, parent= column, value=value
