i know how to protect a spreadsheet, but in reality this does nothing as it can be circumnavigated with a simple copy and paste. is there a way to protect and disable copy and paste whenever the spreadsheet is opened.
I don't fully understand. Do you mean you can password protect in general options but then it doesnt work because you can copy and paste the file somwhere else?
You still need the password when originally protected to open, even if it has been copied and pasted somewhere else. Or do you want to disable to ability to move/copy the file from its location?
If you use Protect Sheet you can choose to prevent user from selecting cells (excel 2003) - that would help. However an advanced user could break almost all protection that you applied.
