Seen some good stuff on here so thought i would see if anyone has any experience to share.
Ok so ive got all the TechNet articles on this.
I’m going from
3 Exchange servers in 3 separate sites, these are HP cluster packs (active passive) 2003 Sp2 and one bridgehead OWA server. All on Server 2003 SP2. For example i will call them
EX01 – Site 1
EX02 – Site 2
EX03 – Site 3
EXOWA – Bridgehead Site 1
All incoming mail goes through EX01, all outgoing mail goes through EXOWA. Our sites are linked by minimum of 14mb MPLS lines.
All 3 servers contain mailboxes at present.
EX01 – 3 Storage groups – 7 mailbox stores – 1 journal mailbox store.
EX02 – 1 Storage Group
EX03 – 1 Storage group
EXOWA – not used for mailboxes
I will be moving these into a VMWare Environment using HA and Vmotion. Clusters of three physical nodes for licensing purposes. I would like to do away with the Servers EX03 and EXOWA. Moving everything to 2 mailbox servers. I currently imagine the 2007 looking like this
Site 1
Edge Transport Server In DMZ (DMZ created within VMware networking and isolated with our firewall) – EXTRN1
One server running: hub Transport, CA, Mailboxes – EX2K71
Site 2
Edge Transport Server In DMZ (DMZ created within VMware networking and isolated with our firewall) – EXTRN2
One server running: hub Transport, CA, Mailboxes – EX2K72
I will not be using unified messaging.
Please note due to the fact I will probably be using standby replication and that we are using VMware I will not be using multiple servers for resilience also due to MS licensing costs.
It looks like I need to connect 2007 to my bridgehead in 2003 EXOWA to get the two systems to talk. Is this the case ?
I have other systems like email archiving and a Document management system that tie in not to mention a BES server but im not looking at that just yet.
I plan in the end to give the Servers EX2K71 and EX2K72 the same IP addresses as EX01 and EX02.
Anyone who’s been through this process got any useful hint or tips ?
