Exchange 2007 Administrators - Message Recall

Dear peeps,

I was hoping someone can perform a quick test for me?

I am running Exchange server 2007 SP3 ( No Rollups)
Clients vary from: Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007

I always thought that the recipient needs to open the recalled message for the recall to work.

However I have just send a test message to a test mailbox, I then recalled the message and ensured both messages were unread in the Inbox (Reading pane disabled)

After a few minutes both messages are removed without notifying the recipient, but it has informed the sender.

I am certain both messages should stay in the Inbox until either the recalled message is opened or the original is opened first (which would in turn mark the recall as a failure)

can someone try it in their environment?

I can't try at the moment - but my understanding was always the opposite, it could only be recalled if it was unread

An email will only be recalled if the recipient has not opened it - if they have then the recall will fail and you normally would get an email back saying the recall failed.

yup I get that, the recipient did not open either message, both disappeared after a few minutes automatically. I just wanted someone to confirm that is normal behaviour.

I can confirm that is normal behaviour. Recall will only work if the item is unread by the recipient.

Yep, recall works automatically until someone opens the original email, whereby it'll fail.
