Hi guys,

We've just been setting up our new Windows 2008 x64 server.

Spec is Xeon Quad Core E5405, 4GB Ram, 400GB usable hdd space (RAID5).

Weve set the main install as an AD domain controller, and have enabled Hyper-V to install another instance on Server 2008 x64 to install Exchange 2007 on. We'll then use our old 2003 server for Sharepoint.

Question is - what resources would you give the Hyper-V 2nd install for Exchange? I was thinking 200GB, 3GB ram, 2 processors.

Cheers guys,

Mal

Hi,

In a live environment Microsoft recommends 8GB RAM for Exchange 2007. I've run Exchange 2007 with 4GB RAM and found it to be slow.

Ran it with 2GB on a dedicated server and never noticed any slowdown. The more memory the better but that's all dependant upon how many mailboxes you have / going to require.

My live Exchange 2007 box (only other job is Backup Exec) is currently showing 1.6GB free out of 4GB RAM, with store.exe using 970MB RAM and 2.5GB Virtual.

The above 2 posts are probably right. Microsoft recommends 8GB but you may not need it. It all depends on what roles your Exchange servers is going to handle and number of mailboxes you have.

Overclocker, slightly OT, but have you managed to get DHCP running ok with Hyper-V running? as I've done the same as you, but it messed it up and now wont hand out addresses

Hi,

Yep the host OS is the DHCP & DNS server, don't seem to be any problems here! Server has 2 network controllers so one is kept for the host OS and 2nd is used by Hyper-V for guest OSs.
