Guys,

Upgrading an exchange 2007 SP1 server to SP2 and the process has hung on the hub transport role - configuring performance counters.

It's been like that for 1 hour 30 at the moment.

The server holds all the roles, is part of a single domain and the only other server is a legacy exchange 2003 box with a few services running.

I've not seen this issue before and there seems to be little info on the web. The last entry in the setup log is relating to these performance counters.

One of the links i've come across suggests that it will eventually complete;

http://social.technet.microsoft.com...e/thread/92be3c8f-a7f2-41bb-9683-5bdfc0fb3f3d

Problem is I had a 3 hour window to do this upgrade which is slowly disappearing!! I've disabled AV, Backup Exec Agent and anything else I can see that is running. The only thing mentioned that I haven't tried is windows firewall... I could re-enable that (currently disabled through GPO)

I hate to kill and install mid way through - does anyone have any suggestions?

Also - can I kill the upgrade and start the services up again, or am I looking at a new installation?

Thanks

Still running :( - damn why did I do this on a Saturday ;-)

Would it be viable to just end task this installation, reboot - uninstall exchange and reinstall using the /recoverserver switch (using Sp1?)

Alternatively - does anyone know a way I can 'roll back' these changes? Bearing in mind the cancel button is greyed out, so I guess I cannot do it via the installer!!

Well I seem to be up and running after cancelling the installation - I disabled services and rebooted, checked all logs and the EMC and it looks as though although the files are copied from the SP2 install, the elements, e.g. Hub Transport/CAS/Mailbox were still running 8.1 - I made the jump and decided to start the services and all is up and running, albeit without webmail/activesync/pop3/imap which I guess is because the files are version 8.2 and the program is looking for 8.1. I can live without these for a couple of days.

I don't really want to do anything further at this stage with this exchange box. What I want to do is install another exchange server and migrate mailboxes to it.

I plan to install an exchange box with Exchange SP2 and then migrate slowly. Can an exchange 2007 SP1 box be run alongside an exchange 2007 SP2 box in the same site? I gather it's no problem having all roles on both boxes...

Just a quick update with this.

It turned out to be the installed HP Server Agents that were causing the installation failure.

The procedure I had to follow to resolve was to;

- Set the startup type of all HP Agents to 'Manual', and Stop them.
- Search for 'HPPerfProv.DLL' (Should be 2 entries) - rename them to .OLD
- Set the startup type of any none required services, e.g. BEX, Signature s/w, etc
- Reboot
- Restart the installation, this time with success!

We had to run for a full day without any OOF Functionality or OWA, etc. - and in sort of a mixed version install (EMC stating 8.2.xx, roles stating 8.1) so was kind of a relief to have the update succeed.

I am giving SP3 a miss and going straight to a 2010 upgrade now we have the compatibility.
