i need to import maybe 4,000 contacts into exchange 5.5 so i can migrate to 2k3 exchange and as its not directly connected to an adc it poses an issue any help ?>

if youre going to exchange 2003 youll need to migrate the users over to the AD anyway..

edit- actually re-reading your question its not 100% clear what youre asking. i think from what youre asking - youll need to create logons to migrate to 2003/Active Directory if i remember rightly so youll need a domain controller connected or available.

sorry im totally getting myself confused here..... ikle hard day ...i just want a "contact" only importer for exchange 5.5 not the adc just exchange

There used to be a utility for Exch5.5 called Header.exe that created a csv file with schema headings specifically for use with Exch5.5 importing and exporting of mailboxes, custom recipients etc and it let you specify what you want.
Might still be available for download for MS but found one site here that still has a download link.

Sorry about the link - it was just a lazy google thing on my part for any links to the exe. I didnt check the link. It should do the job - just remember it will only make an empty csv file with the schema headers you select from the list. Sorry if you're aware of this - I only mention this because I think people in past have expected header.exe to do everything.
Exch5.5 then recognises the headers and exports to / imports from it.

it must have been an old page he had but then re-allocated to some where else but thanks a lot well be trying it out pretty soon :D
