exchange domain question.

i am going to put a small exchange installation in. as i understand it exchange 2003 requires active directory to run, the two run hand in hand. therefore i will have to make AD user accounts and have mailboxes for them for the mail on the exchange server to work.

unfortunately some of the user PCs are win XP home which does not support a domain.

my question is, can i create domain user accounts for the users, and set outlook 2003 client up on the users machine to pick mail up against the exchange server (using the correct credentials), without putting the users PCs on the domain? or is that simply not possible. thanks.
 
Yes it will work.

Two options here

1) If you configure outlook on the clients to point to the server on a non domain client you will be prompted for a username/password when you connect.

The username must be entered in the format of DOMAINNAME\USERNAME

also when you configure outlook you may need to use the servers IP address rather then its name (Depending how you are set-up for name resolution)


2) Under 2003 Outlook Web Access is installed by default so the users could us Internet Explorer and navigate to http://servername/exchange and then enter their username and password here.
 
If that didnt work, you could always create the user in active directory and then setup outlook anywhere on each of the xp home pc's.
