I've installed SBS2003 and I want to be able to access exchange and / or exchange calendar, any idea what ports I need to forward to the server from my firewall?
If you mean for direct connection from Outlook to Exchange, Exchange randomly assigns ports each time it starts which is stupid but that's Microsoft for you. It is possible to fix which ports it uses but that is not officially supported by M$. Better to try to setup the webmail access to Exchange.
N.B. The above certainly used to be true but I cannot confirm it is still true for the most recent version of Exchange.
Have a look at RPC over HTTPS. This allows you to set up Outlook so that it can connect to the exchange server over the internet using a secure (SSL) channel, ie no need for a VPN. That would mean only port 443 is needed. This is harder to set up than OWA (which is pretty much good to go by default) but i think it's worth it.
