My Saphire 4870 has just arrived! And I'm stuck at work, it's staring at me with it's pretty eyes and ENORMOUS rump (hope it fits )!

Moving up from an X1900XT, which should be good. Hoping to get it installed in super quick time as I'm gaming tonight. First game to try it out on? UT2004 :p

Off to peruse the forums about best Catalysts to get....

Sorry for rambling.... Just looking forward to it!

P.S. Also got me a Samsung F1 1Tb, but that'll do for the weekend.

That's really odd. I just got the same combination, except it was a Gainward 4870. By the way, that Samsung 1TB drive takes an absolute age to format!

I have the Sapphire 4870 and it runs really quietly which is great. However it does run a little hot but it's something that's never bothered me, it only bothers me if it makes my games stop working :p

Don't think I'll OC it for a bit tho. I think my most demanding games are Bioshock/NWN2. Not that many cutting edge!

After 6 months or so, I'll get an aftermarket cooler and clock it's breasts off.

Famous last words ^

Gutted! UT2004 played like a dream, as expected, but when I maxed everything in KotOR I wasn't getting more than 40fps in an area with no enemies.

Latest Cats (8.7). I'll do some tinkering.....

I'll try Bioshock too.

Hm, I'm not sure this is right.

UT2004 fine and dandy

Bioshock ran great maxed at vsync 60fps. Impressed!

KotOR crashes whenever I cast "Force Wave".

3DMark06 refuses to start properly, gets to the splash and sucks up 50% (all of 1 core) until I kill it.

NWN2 has performance of a dog - 5-25 fps (5 quite a lot of the time).

UT2004 max on 150fps+

Need to test more but too tired :o

Can anybody else with a 4870 let me know what they get in a Furmark bench (max 1680x1050) please?

There is a .dll file in Windows/system32/futuremark that needs deleting, can't remember what its called?

Ah brill, thanks for that. Found the info here, summarised ->

Go to the c:\windows\system32\futuremark\msc directory and rename or delete the file "direcpll.dll" if you install another 3Dmark like 03 or 05 you will have to do this again.

3DMark06 score is 13476, up a lot from the X1900XTs 6000 ish.

Sorry for being a plebb - you don't mean 3DMark03 do you?

That looks like a Vantage score, 4k's not something you'd shout about from 03 or 06.

BTW, the F1......I have it on good authority from an MSCE, that if using NTFS, you never need to do the "full" format, but can go straight ahead and "quick" format a newly created partition. Tried it a couple of times with no bother so far, beyond on one ocassion having to reboot before I could write to it....but I'd created partions and quick formatted them all in one sitting, and one of them was a primary partition so, I really should have rebooted anyway.

Should save you some time anyway.

I had to apply a 3dmark hotfix before it would run on the 4850 BTW, quick google should find it for you, or a quick look on Futuremark's website.

That's interesting - thanks for that. I did the full format, and didn't create any partitions as this drive for me is just a backup for my other 3.
