I've just bought an exercise bike in order to lose some weight and get fitter and healthier again.

The thing is I haven't done any exercise for a few years. I'm 5"11 and 13 and a half stone, so I'm not a big person by any means. My BMI states I'm just slightly overweight but all that weight is pretty much down to my beer belly!

My question is having not exercised for so long how should I approach a weight loss programme, is it a bad idea to do half hour sessions 5/6 days as week or better to do less to start with?

First, disregard BMI: I'm currently 'overweight' according to that scale, and I suspect a couple of the more ripped people on this forum are borderline obese because of the muscle they carry. So that's your first thing.

Secondly, you have a beer belly because of your lifestyle, not your lack of exercise. :) So the question is not whether or not an exercise bike will make it disappear, but whether you actually want a healthier lifestyle?

If yes, then help is at hand. Record a week-long food diary, post it on here, and then we will help you structure it properly.

In the mean time, if you're not going to join a gym and do this properly, then have a think about high intensity interval training. There are a couple of ratios out there (30seconds @ 100% -> 2 minutes 'coasting' -> 30 seconds @100% or whatever) which I can only approximate at the moment, but they will be your best bet for what you're trying to achieve without falling asleep.

In summary: join a gym. Lift weights. Acquire aesthetics. ;) :D
