Exhaust problems :(

I'm having a bad run of luck with regards to my Peugeot 106 exhaust recently.... pretty much since 35k miles plus.

In summer something that looked like "plugs" at the front of the car into the exhaust had to be welded back on - the cause of which is unknown to me but it made a mighty exhaust growl!

Then 2 weeks ago, the actual exhaust pipe that runs the length of the car became disconnected at the front of the car, and started scraping along the ground whilst on a motorway (lovely!) - again, this was welded.

And in the past few days my car has once again sounded like a boy-racer car due to a problem with the exhaust at the rear of the car. I thought there was a hole in the silencer, but yet again I heard the wonderful noise of the exhaust falling off and dragging along the ground. This time of course, the exhaust pipe which runs along the car had became disconnected at the rear.

I've given up with getting it welded, and I'm now going to take it to a local garage (not Peugeot!) and get a new system put in tomorrow. Is it common for the exhaust to break after 40k miles? If not, is there any major causes for this to happen?

Exhausts can go at any point, its rarely worth getting it welded to repair them as decent replacements are pretty cheap from motorfactors.

I was quoted over £300 by 1 garage to replace the exhaust system.... so I'm a bit confused now when another one was talking about £80. mmm!

I want a standard type exhaust put on the car, not one of those huge chrome jobs, or even one that you can easily see from the back. Hopefully the garage will be able to do the job tomorrow!

£300 is probably the full manifold, mid section and back box. £80 is probably just the back box and maybe the mid section(including a CAT?).

I'd phone some local motorfactors who should be able to supply a decent replacement such as Bosal or Timax, then phone some decent local garages for prices for fitting, they shouldnt charge too much as its a fairly simple job.
