The Golf failed it's MOT yesterday on the following:

Headlight alignment - fixed tonight when it gets dark
Numberplate light bulb blown - fixed already with a spare bulb
Exhaust hole before Cat

I've located the holes, there are holes either side of the cat from where it has been welded in, structurally it seems fine. The question is, can these be fixed with some putty or bandage to get through the MOT and if so, which of Halfords' finest should I purchase to use?

Thats only going to last 6 months before it rusts through. When the join starts to go, it justs from the inside-out, so the outside may seem solid but its buggered beneath.

Strictly speaking, yes you can cover it in halfords finest repair bandage but in 6 months time, i wouldn't like to be the car following you on the motorway when the joint lets go and either a) bends under your car b) flies off somewhere.

You might be able to find a garage that'll repair it for you, but depending on the age of the thing it might just be worth replacing it!

We are talking bangernomics here, it only needs to last me 12 months, being as cheap as humanly possible, it's not a fun car, just an A to B one!

Yep any of the gum/bandage jobs should do you fine for getting it through an MOT. My old favourite was 2 pence coins bent to the required profile and then araldited on. I once had a car that had about 60p in coins stuck to the exhaust before I finally changed it lol :)

Lol, rice pudding tins and jubilee clips for me :D

Lol, thought it was just me :D

As Jonny says....

Hack both ends off a bean tin (eat the beans first), split it down the length, wrap it round with some paste underneath it first then jubilee clip it up. Job done ;)

Didnt they adjust your lights for you whilst doing the mot? tight gits, place I use just whipped his screwy out and twiddled until it was right.

pfft

someone obviously not versted in bangernomics :)

easy enough to sleeve it and weld it up good as new :)

I was a bit annoyed the didn't adjust the lights, there's a simple nob to turn with your fingers on the back of the lights, wouldn't have taken them a few seconds.

Just for general info rice pudding tins are longer than baked bean tins and make a bigger "repair"

Bah, now I feel silly shelling out for a new exhaust :p

Having said that the pipe coming out the back of my cat is absolutely rotten (a couple of lumps fell off the end piece when they took my old exhaust off  ) so thats only a matter of time before its got holes :o

Yeah but tizor have you ever tried to weld a crusty old pipe that is as thin as rusty tinfoil? It's normally the rust that is blocking the rest of the holes :p
