What kinds of problems would or could a broken, cracked or faulty exhuast system/pipes cause?

Mainly noise. A common issue with the Fiat Coupe was the chrome tip of the exhaust rusting and coming off, which led to the bumpers melting.

Thanks, just really want to know how an exhuast affects the car, other then being the way the emissions from the engine are expelled.

It can also leak carbon monoxide into the cabin which can make you a bit drowsy

Cracked manifolds can lead to lean running conditions as well, which can (besides poor running) lead to overheating and piston/valve damage.

It depends which part of the exhaust system is bust as to the problems it causes.

More than you might think too!

Mines cracked at the down pipe (thank you very much shocking roads in glasgow and a low slung car lol), and instead of gettin my usual 70-80 miles to £10, i was getting maybe 40-50... if that!

Suppose the down pipe is right at the start of the system... might not be as bad further towards the rear

Edit : Oh and the car was super sluggish!

If the exhaust is blowing then it can mess the Lambda sensor reading which will cause the car to overfuel. It can also then break the Lambda sensor if left long enough.

The car will feel sluggish in the bottom half of the revs and use way more fuel than usual.
