bit of a daft question for you guys.

is it OK to install a sata PCI-E expansion card without the bracket?

i have a spare sata card and want to install to a microserver but don't have a low profile bracket, i know it sounds a cowboy job :p but was hoping to have the microserver up and running over the weekend.

The bracket isn't required for the card to work, all it does is stop the card falling out of the slot. If the card sits vertically and your careful that the cables aren't putting pressure on the card then you should be fine. I wouldn't fancy trying it with a horizontal card though.

Could do a bit of a ghetto mod and try tying it with some string somehow. But as rpstewart says the bracket is just used to secure it so prevent it falling out of the PCI-E slot.

just as i thought, i installed the card but because it is a new sata cable the card wouldn't stay in the slot so ordered another with low profile bracket.

thanks for the help.
