Right,

Any of you guys been through Lagos (Nigeria) recently? Just wondering about current conditions, living there, flare up of trouble etc.

Cheers,

KaHn

Not recently but I was born in Nigeria and spent a lot of time at Lagos airport and local airport.
It was really bad back then (last time was 1979) so I imagine it to be worse now.

Fact -
Nigeria based it's main airport on Heathrow and ordered in the same equipment and still in 1979 there were two unused snow ploughs at the end of the runway :D

Had to decide whether to go or not for a recent project and decided not was best at the mo. I normally travel anywhere but our site was in a real no man's land and I didn't think it was worth the risk. Had lots of reassurance from the client that it isn't as bad as perceived but just didn't fancy it.

Ah right, this would be based in Lagos on an expat community, I wouldn't be going anywhere near Warri/PH. Just waiting to get all the information through so thought I'd ask on here.

Yeah, not trying to put you off with that. Our site was about 4 hours outside lagos. I have another proposal out for Lagos itself and will look at that fresh as to whether I travel. I did the work anyway just desk based.

I know people in Lagos at the moment so just waiting to hear back from them.

Lagos being relatively safe/in the green part. Presumably the money's going to be excellent? I'd be tempted... assuming there were the obvious assurances re: security.

Yeah I know its relatively safe wrt Nigeria in general, as for money I'm not going to discuss that here as it gets taken out of context etc.

It'd be compound based so security forces on site, drivers in and out of places, the usual stuff. Still just waiting to hear the full story from the guys above.

He's not been there for a few years but my dad has worked there multiple times over the years and not had any problems.

If you're actively looking for work abroad rather than just having been offereded work in Lagos, have you considered Luanda in Angola, my dads just been there for 2 years and he said it was alright.

The above is assuming i'm right in remembering you're in the Oil industry.

Not actively looking for work overseas, just interested in this rotation as i'm being put forward for it.

Yeah, Oil industry.

He's just been offered Lagos.

Yup, Oil.

Edit: Busy morning for us both being on here :D:D:D

I thought you designed cat flaps? ;)

Thats just a side line business.

Does the Prime Minister really need to be involved?

I think he's the only one to really advise on my travel arrangements, not like hes doing anything else.

Oh yeah, I didn't mean specifics... I just meant that presumably it's a good amount, without mentioning figures. With how security contractors vary, I'd say all you can really do is look at the measures in place yourself and see if you're satisfied, and combine that with asking guys you know who are in the same place/have the same arrangements as you'll have... and that's what you're doing already.

I mean, a friend was there recently (offshore on a boat, but came ashore to get a flight home), but her experience is bordering on irrelevant, considering the arrangements for you will be completely different.

Yeah I didn't really think to look into the security contractors credentials but will have a look when I get more info.

A friend of my other half travels to Lagos/PH quite frequently setting up exhibitions for the oil and gas companies down there. She travels alone frequently, and seems to get on fine when she's over there. Although she says she's eaten enough goat curry to last a lifetime, and rebuffed more male advances than she cares to think of!

One story she did mention from her most recent trip was stepping in between two gentlemen having a rather heated argument in the middle of an exhibition centre and splitting them apart. It was only after the hubbub died down that she realised they were both carrying assault rifles, as were most of their respective entourages...

When in the O&G industry myself, we used to hear stories a plenty of goings on down in that part of the world. Rough, rag tag, shady and downright questionable goings on. My favourite has to be the party chief who thought it would be funny to buy a prostitute and slip her into the compound, and point her towards the new guy's bedroom. Queue him waking up at 3am with a nylon wigged woman who smelt of unmentionable odours trying to get into his pants, and the party chief waiting outside the room for the fireworks to erupt lol. They did, she got booted out sharpish.

So the party chief took her off to his room instead lol.

The other stories all centre around what we'd term as health and safety nightmares, but seem to be common place over there. Heavy rain causing fast flowing water cascades over power phase junction boxes, intermittent connectivity, VSATs getting nicked, and local militiamen being paid off to protect the staff. Sounds fairly standard tbh. :D
