yeah not going to get great bass with "sub" that's inside a soundbar.
It depends on what your reference point is. Is a soundbar with separate sub and rears as good as dedicated speakers, including heights on the ceiling and amp? No, but a high end one in a normal sized living room is good enough.
Hold on, are you talking about bass from the main soundbar itself? I didn't say you could get great bass from a soundbar, I even said due to driver size restrictions there's only so much you can do. With that said, there's a difference between a high end sound bar and a cheap £70 soundbar. Whilst neither will provide you with lots of bass you'll get a far nicer experience with the better soundbar.
Personally a soundbar with rears and subwoofer fits perfectly for my circumstances. If for whatever reason I couldn't have a sub and rears then I'd prefer a pair of bookshelf speakers over just a soundbar, and even they come with their own drawbacks, lack of centre channel so sound sometimes doesn't sound right.
