Experience of connecting via proxies?

Anyone ever connected via a proxie? How was it?

Just looking for peoples experiences. I tried it a few times... once was years ago to get past my colleges firewall, another was to try and watch episodes from FOX. Was only available to US citizens. This failed miserably. It absolutely crawled and couldn't find a reliable one.

Anyone else do this. I also remember playing with "Hide IP" software many years ago.

So, what's your experiences, how do you do it, why and how does it work?

Ive never had any luck with any public proxies.

I just use a cheap US server with SSH access as a proxy if I need to.

Public proxies don't seem to be upto much do they? Wasn't sure if it was just myself being unlucky.
