Ok, so my domain expired almost 20 days ago.

The reason I didn't renew is because it had originally been registered with Fasthosts donkey's years ago - I didn't have a registered card with them anymore and I couldn't be bothered with the faff so I let it expire with the intention of just re-registering it with my current domain provider (1&1). Bear in mind it's a personal address, totally useless to anyone but me - www.rghjones.co.uk.

The strange thing is my website was still up and emails were working fine until today. Now I've tried to get it back - whois'ing it just returns an error and there's a sedo parking page on there. Fasthosts says the name servers are x.domcollect.com, and I can't change them back to Fasthosts (Error: This domain is locked for the period following Expiry). I have now selected "Allow rghjones.co.uk to expire" (was previously auto-renew).

I've begun the transfer to 1&1 and changed the IPS tag to SCHLUND.

Now I'm not sure what to do - has it been stolen, is it in the internet aether or is everything fine and it'll land up over at 1&1 in a few days time?

Thanks in advance :)

You're still the registrant (i.e. the legal owner) as far as Nominet is concerned, but you'll need to renew the domain before it can be transferred to 1&1 I'd have thought.

Well I've changed the IPSTAG to SCHLUND (1&1) and begun the transfer at their end (accepting domain charges) so is that all that's needed? I don't want to renew with Fasthosts as I'll have to pay again once I change it over to 1&1.

It's one of those things - I've got about 30 domains but never had to renew one manually :p

You can only renew with the registrar whose tag the domain is currently on...

You won't have to pay 1&1 because they won't be able to renew the domain once its been renewed for 2 years with fasthosts (2 years is the max and minimum for a .UK renewal/registration). Or at least you shouldn't have to pay, since they wouldn't be doing anything their side.

I would renew it with Fasthosts...

Do you have a IPS tag change/transfer out option in the Fasthosts control panel?

A tag change should be instant - you shouldn't have to wait unless they do them in batches on a cron job or something...

Ah yes, my bad. I forgot, I received "Error: This domain is locked for the period following Expiry" when trying to change the IPS tag. Any idea what this means/how long it lasts/how to get around it?

Fasthosts are fantastically bad at this - I would have thought they had a simple "renew" button but - they don't! You have to email support....
