I understand dsl, you have a telephone connection box, you fit a dsl splitter for phone and dsl box output then connect rj45 to router and it works.

How is fibre connected from outside to in, what cable is used and what is the difference between boxes themselves and the spec requires for fibre optic.

And specific make and models where I can replace the dsl box with fibre box.

Do the boxes look different at the back panel ie is the cable unique and tell difference dsl and fibre box.

I think you'll just get yourself confused.

There are two types of 'Fibre'. Fibre To The Cabinet or FTTC where a fibre optic cable is run to the local green box and then your existing copper line is still used as it would be in ADSL but because the copper line is now much shorter the available speeds can be pumped up with up to 80Mbps available if you're within a couple of hundred metres of the cabinet.

Then there's Fibre To The Premises (FTTP sometimes called FTTH, Fibre To The Home) where the Fibre optic cable comes right to the house and can offer speeds of up to 1Gbps.

You can't just fit a fibre box inside the house and get it, it requires a lot more work than that.

You may be referring to a SSFP or Service Specific Face Plate which was often fitted by Openreach when they installed Fibre. This can normally be fitted yourself if you have a newer NTE5 BT faceplate.

Most stuff advertised as 'fibre' isn't, so it would help to let us know what you're buying so people can let you know what to expect.

Just the regular 35mps one at about £20 a month

That would be fibre to the cabinet. Your ADSL understanding is more or less true apart from rather than your line being terminated in the exchange, it's terminated in a local cabinet. That's a simple way of explaining it and then cabinet to exchange is done by......you guessed it. Fibre.
