It appears to me that gaming at certain res requires for best performance certain amounts of vram.
What are the constraints of such amounts, what are the determining factors?
Does vsync matter? Aa? Af? Triple buffering? Or is it all res related.

Sweet spot for 1920*1200?

For that res, 1.5GB minimum, 2GB ideal for future cards.

Vsync does not really affect Vram.

Short answer atm probably 1.5gig some examples of battlefield 3 using upto 1.6 gig are floating about. It will probably get larger in the future.

Resolution is the biggest factor, then probably view distance. aa and af can add a few hundred megabytes. Vsync has no real effect.
