Explain Intel sockets plz

Hi,

My first post so be gentle please.

Basically my old Intel E6600 socket 775's motherboard has given up the ghost. I think it is an old Asus P4P SLI board. Budget is really tight so I have replaced it with a cheap Asus Micro ATX board and am using DDR3 Ram. In the meantime I have also replaced power supply and upgraded the video card.

I play some games but am not really interested in playing everything at the highest specs.

My next upgrade will be the processor and motherboard but I am getting very confused about the new sockets. I see there is now 1155, 1156 and 1366 i7. I see a lot of the processors are available in each socket type. There seems to be a lot more motherboards available for 1155 sandybridge.

Would you advise me to go for socket 1155 or would I be better going for one of the others?

BTW no AMD recommendations please.
 
The latest socket is 1155 which supports Intel Sandy Bridge processors e.g. i5-2500, i3-2100, i7-2600, etc

Edit: That is any processor that the model number starts with a 2xxx to denote the new SB microarchitecture

Can get confusing. You have micro-architectures (Nehalem, Sandybridge, IvyBridge), sockets (1155, 2011), chipsets (P67, Z68, H61, H67), processors (pentium-i3-i5-i7)...

Sandybridge 1155 is the new socket. The other 1156, 1366 are end of the line.
