Explain this bizarre "interference" noise please

I have dual 19" Samsung TFT's in front of me. Either side of the screens are M-Audio monitor speakers.

I'm hearing the interference only in the speaker to my left. It sounds a bit like the noise a printer makes - that kind of abrasive electronic grind, but quite faintly. There's a continual buzz that gets amplified when I do certain things.

If I move my mouse cursor around, it makes the weird sound louder. In my speaker. If my mouse cursor is still, theres just the ambient buzzing.

If I make this Firefox window small, and drag it around the screen, it makes a much deeper noise.

If I grab my Steam window however, and drag it around, the entire interference stops, even the background buzzing. It resumes as soon as the Steam window becomes still again.

Some sort of monitor interference? Well this was my first thought. However, it all continues to happen exactly the same with both monitors turned off.

So, err.. What's going on?

Just had to add, it makes an almost humorous sort of "sliding" buzz when I get a little pop up notification in the corner. It would seem my speakers are creating sound from image.

You using onboard sound? I've had similar symptoms with the onboard sound on my A8N-SLI32, the sound stuff was very susceptible to electonic noise from the other components.

I had a weird noise from my left speaker recently. I found that taking my router off the top of my amplifier and putting it about a metre away stopped the noise. Although your problem sounds like something internal going wrong.

similar problem . im using onboard sound. i believe it has something to do with gfx card though not sure. its a sorta crackling on high pitched sounds. particular with speech

If I remember correctly this is due to interference on the PCI bus. Try upping the PCI frequency by 1 Mhz or using the in built offset/spread spectrum.

I get the same thing when moving the mouse around. I thought it was CPU or mouse, but could be PCI link to USB I guess. Oh and it gets worst the higher the mouse rate is, so using 500Hz now.

What's the "in built offset/spread spectrum" by the way?
