Either as above or perhaps somebody who never gets deeply involved with anything or anyone in life. They avoid deep commitment.

Trawling would suggest a deeper engagement than skipping (or skimming) would. If the comparison was between two approaches then it might make sense e.g. Fred is one of lifes trawlers while Barry skips across the surface - to imply that Fred takes in the depths that life has to offer contrasting with Barry to more or less floats over the top. Either approach may have value, it depends on what you want to achieve.
