Looking to buy my first car sometime soon and have been looking at the Fiesta Zetec's (1.25l why such an odd size engine?) and for some reason insurers are quoting me silly prices on them compared to other cars.

Is there something about Zetec engines that puts the insurance up?

Cheers.

Higher performance engines to that of normal Fords... come in 2 varities Zetec and ZetecS

Higher BHP...

You should buy it because it has -tec in the name. It must be good because nearly every other manufacturer uses it too.

I have no idea what it means :(

It's not some special engine that has more power or second cam that makes magic happen!

Ford used it as the name for a range of their engines. They are fitted to many Fords; Fiesta, Mondeo, Escort to name a few.

A few years later Ford started to use the word Zetec as a trim specification level.

For instance you can purchase a Ford Mondeo Ghia 2litre which has a Zetec engine but to confuse matters you could buy a lower spec Mondeo Zetec 2litre which has the same Zetec engine. You could buy a 1.8TD (diesel) Mondeo Zetec but that would have a "Endura" diesel engine.

So, to sum up it's a word used by Ford when they named a series of engines but they also used the word when naming a trim spec. level. The two are not linked and you don't have to have a Zetec engine to have a Zetec spec. trim and vice versa!

The 1.25 engine in the Fiesta is actually very good. When it was launched it had an output comparable to most other small cars with the equivalent 1.4 litre engine.
I had one for 5 years and it was faultless. The car wasn't, but the engine was.
Actually, the car was pretty good for a tin can.

funny how it is a 1242cc engine, just like FIATs small engine. Ford call it a 1.25 and FIAT call it a 1.2

Zetec Sigmas (the 1.25, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7) were designed by Yamaha and are DAMN good engines. 1.6 gives 100bhp stock and will kick 220 on stock valve sizes.

(1.25l why such an odd size engine?)

Mostly because they didn't want to say "1.2", as that's what their rivals were selling, and they already had a "1.3" engine in the range (Endura-E?). So it ended up as a 1.25 litre motor :)
