explain ddr2 with core 2 fsb

hi all,

ive been out of the loop with computers for a few months, and dont really understand the whole ddr2 scene

basically, as a q6600 for example runs a 1066fsb, is it necessary to have pc8500 ram, or would 6400 work to the same speeds etc,

sorry for a stupid post, but if anyone could explain the ddr module speeds and the relation with multipliers and fsb i wouls be very much appreciated.

You need half the fsb for Intel cpus. So 1066mhz fsb needs ddr533 ram.

Inet quad pump the FSB so its achualy 1066/4 then you x by the multiplyer.

For a Q6600 its 1066/4x9=2398.5 which is practicaly 2.4ghz


The ram is doubled. So 1000mhz is achualy 500mhz ram but its DDR2 so its doubled.

Hence only having to devide the 1066 by 2 to find out the ram speed as it saves time instead of dividing by 4 and times by 2.

Of course you will be overclocking to 1333mhz FSB so will want 667mhz ddr2

No because the cpu can't make use of the extra bandwidth.

What about using dividers?

Putting the multiplyer on 8 instead of 9 and using 400fsb you can get 3.2ghz Q6600 and 1000mhz ram on a 4:5 divider.

Well in that case yes there is a benefit. I don't think it's anything to write home about though.
