hi,

sorry to sound stupid, but could someone please explain to me how does virgin sets the download speed and limit:confused:
I know that the hours are from 4pm to 9 pm but one should be able to have unlimited uncapped download other than those hours are there?
also does any download one does before 4pm adds to the capping done before 4pm to 9 pm

I would apprecaite it if someone would be willing to explain in extremely great details on how the capping system works with words of around one syllables :)

from what i can gether they are trailing diffrent limits in diffrent places...

I can understand y they are doing it, but i thought that they were rolling out new 20-50 MB systems that would free up some much needed bandwith...

Its detailed very simply on the VM site.

It's simple. If you go over the allowance between 4pm and 9pm your connection gets throttled for the next 5 hours. Outside of those hours your connection is completely unlimited. The counter starts at 4pm, any downloads up until that point don't matter.

That's how it works for me, but they are trialling longer STM hours in some areas and have also admitted using longer STM hours in some areas that are oversubscribed.

What is the allowance?
And how much is the speed reduced by the throttle if you go over the allowance?

You can continue to download outwith those times, but your speed will be cut.

I think it's a fair policy. No ISP can allow its users unlimited downloads at peak time. If you have to download massive amounts, do so at night or during the day.

The VM site isn't accurate either - it doesn't mention the different times in different areas or the 'almost anytime' STM trials going on at the moment.

While traffic management is a controversial subject but I feel with this policy being implemented, it does benefit everybody in my opinion. Previously when it was Telewest, i used to get fed up with customers complaining of slow speed and much of the real issue is due to people within VM network downloading illegal movies, pictures, music with download managers downloading one file to another. Now with the traffic management policy being implemented within the whole VM cable network, the call volume for slow speeds have dropped dramatically. So, I am for traffic management. Just remember that Virgin Media is allowing customers to download as much they want BUT with a speed decrease penalty rather than a download CAP.

Lets not get into a discussion about whether or not it's a good thing or bad thing - every single VM thread seems to get dragged down into that territory.

You do realise that 99.99% of all questions asked in these forums (made up statistic) could be answered by some simple research?

The op admitted he didn't understand the system and asked for a clear explanation. I see absolutely no problem with that. As for the information being on the ISP's home page, you're wrong. In fact it's buried away somewhere most easily found by using an internet search engine.
