Hey, if you guys could help with my friends issue it would be great. Here it is:

Every time i drag a large (bigger than 10 meg) movie file into any media player it says it has encountered a problem and closes down. Also when I left click on the file in an explorer window it says that explorer has encountered a problem and has to close. I also cannot open the windows search. I've tried a hell of a lot of updating of programs and windows and non of that seems to work.

I am really not sure mate, you spend hours, days finding out what is causing that. Personally I would bit the bullet and just format.

Rather than formatting, would reinstalling the OS/repairing the installation be suffecient because the backup process would be arduous.

You could try it. If it is a driver issue, well a Windows driver, then the reinstall SHOULD sort it and if it doesn't then you really would need to format the disk.

Have you got just the one drive? I.e. just a C:\? I used to have 2 drives on my disk, meaning that the D:\ was a brilliant backup device, just copied everything I needed from C:\ to D:\, format and still keep important data, files etc. You could try this out if you haven't got a separate partition already.
