Explorer.exe won't load in windows xp

I need help,

A pc i have isn't loading explorer.exe, its showing the mouse and backgroud, i've picked up that explorer.exe doesn't load up. i can use it i just have to go ctrl + Alt + del and file new task and type 'explorer.exe' then windows loads up as normal.

How can i rectify it so that i don't have to keep loading explorer.exe.

Do virus and spyware scans. A friend gave me his laptop with the same thing turned out to be a virus, but when I removed it, it wouldnt load the wallpaper and cursor came up with some error. I googled it and had to replace a file/ change a registry key with erd commander. You could probably do the same with linux if it came to that. But make sure you have a second pc that you can use if need be.
