Explorer won't load properly.

I am running Windows XP SP2 on my desktop computer. When I booted it this morning it would not load properly. I got past the logging in screen, but only loaded the wallpaper, not the task bar or any desktop items. I could CTRL+ALT+DEL and use File>Run to launch programs but explorer.exe would not load. I could open folders through internet explorer but the windows would lock up at random and I couldn't get rid of them. Other programs like Firefox and Avast would also freeze.

After rebooting a few times and getting into Safe Mode, which loaded correctly, I tried doing a system restore to last night. This broke it even furthur to the point where XP would not log in at all. I did a second restor to thursday afternoon, which restored it to it's previous not working conditions. Eventually I got out my XP CD and tried "upgrading" XP from the CD. After a few stages of the wizard, this came up with an error message saying that some software has not finished installing properly and told me to log out and lof back in again so that an app to fix the install would run. I tried to log out using task manager, but this just froze the system so i was forced to reboot.

When XP rebooted explorer loaded perfectly. I guessed that the patch Windows had installed last night had not installed correctly and had now fixed itself and started using the computer normally. After a while, explorer began to act weirdly again. Windows locked up and when I ended explorer's process I could not restart it again. I rebooted the computer but it happened again. After the second reboot, I was stuck back with no interface and the same locking up windows.

I tried running the install cd again but it does not give the same error, instead it gets stuck trying to cope a .dll file. I don't know enough about Windows system files to confidently skip it so I am stuck. It looks like there's something wrong with explorer, but it was working properly for an hour or so and it works perfectly in Safe Mode.

If anyone could give me some help getting it working again I would be incredibly grateful. Reinstalling Windows would be a real pain in the ass, but everything is backed up so I can do it if nescessary.

I'm not sure. I've done what one website referred to as a repair install which was basically to put the XP CD in while XP was runng and select install from the auto-run menu and then tell it to upgrade XP. That's the "upgrade" install I was referring to above.

If that's not a repair install then I don't think I know what one is. Booting from the CD and selecting repair just gives me the recovery console and I have no idea what needs to be fixed so that's not much help.

However, after making the thread I went into safe mode and ran Avast again. This time it didn't crash and found a trojan called lens.dll during the splash screen memory scan. It's now running a boot time san to get rid of it so hopefully that was what was causing the problem.

Edit: Thanks for replying. :)

No probs. I think there is a "Repair install" option that you see early on but you need to carry on with the "Install" option and you'll find a repair install option later on.

Boot into safe mode and open a command prompt put the XP cd in the drive and type the following

Code:
sfc.exe /scannow

let it do its thing and that should fix it.
