Hello,

I'm trying to get my dad off windows XP for obvious reasons ( not even the security reasons, but the fact that you can't use modern software on it, rubbish networking navigation & configuration, rubbish driver support, etc...).

The reason he refuses to get off win xp is the fact that he can't export his mail.

He recently ''upgraded'' to win xp x64, moved his outlook folders by simply copying the .dbx files ( somewhere in appdata/identities/microsoft/etcetc).

Thunderbird would be fine, as that can be set up to look just like outlook express, however, when I use the built-in function to export, I get a MAPI error. I have no idea how to move his mailboxes ( gigabytes worth of mails) into a new client.

Does anyone know how to export the thousands of mails into a different mail client so he can finally use Win 7 or even 10 ( though I doubt it, since that whines about activation for every HW change while he changes his mainboard every other week and even uses his hdd to work on multiple pc's) or how to fix the MAPI error ?

Outlook express has very limited export options - it can only export to the full version of outlook - I believe the mapi error occurs as outlook isn't installed on the machine.

I think you can install a trial of outlook, export from outlook express into outlook, then thunderbird can import from outlook

or

transfer the outlook express store folder (tools, options, maintenance, store folder for path) and Windows Live mail can import the data. Windows Live Mail is part of Windows Live and is a free download from Microsoft.

Take a backup before doing anything else just in case :p
