Hey all, I have been programming PHP for around 10 years now and have recently starting using Expression Engine through work.
What are your experiences with it? From a programmers point of view.
Personally I have never been able to get on with the system, the CMS aspect of it is great, it's quick and easy to build functional CMS pages, however my real grief comes with the front end design and custom functionality.
Unless I am completely missing the big picture with the system I am finding it really difficult to adjust to the way the system works. It is in no way simple to create custom functionality in the front end.
I have a site I am working on at the minute at work which requires a lot of user interaction using forms and lots of custom queries, I know there are modules out there to allow you to quickly build custom forms in the front end (freeform) but it is no where near complex enough for what I need it to do, I have found I have had to write my own modules/plugins/extensions which has become very time consuming and is throwing the project way over budget.
Am I missing something with the system that I'm overlooking? Should it be this difficult to create custom functionality for the site both front and back end?
